Ukraine has one of the most diverse agricultural sectors in Eastern Europe thanks to its extensive arable land, favorable climate, and long-standing farming traditions. The country’s agricultural landscape comprises various types of farm that differ in terms of size, ownership structure and production focus. Together, they form a dynamic system that balances industrial-scale production with smaller, family-run enterprises.
When searching for farms for sale in Ukraine, it is best to bear in mind the need for different checks on different types and forms of farm:
- The most common type of farm is the agricultural enterprise, or agroholding, which operates on a large scale. These entities often manage tens of thousands of hectares and focus on cultivating grains, oilseeds, and industrial crops such as wheat, corn, sunflowers, and rapeseed. Agroholdings typically possess advanced machinery, irrigation systems, and logistics infrastructure, enabling them to export large quantities of produce. They play a significant role in Ukraine’s grain export industry and are a vital part of the national economy.

- Alongside these corporate farms, private peasant farms are widespread. These family-run farms average a few dozen to several hundred hectares in size. Combining traditional farming methods with modern techniques, they usually specialize in mixed production, including grains, vegetables, fruit and livestock. Many of these farms evolved from former collective farm plots and remain important suppliers to local and regional markets.
- Household plots or subsidiary farms are usually small pieces of land, often less than five hectares, and they are farmed by families living in the countryside mainly to provide for themselves. This model is particularly effective in the dairy, fruit and vegetable sectors, where collective marketing can strengthen competitiveness.
- Livestock and poultry farms form a distinct category within Ukraine’s agricultural system. They may operate independently or as part of integrated agribusiness groups, producing meat, eggs and dairy products. Many of these farms are concentrated in the central and western regions, where mixed farming is most prevalent.
In recent years, Ukraine has also seen an increase in the number of organic and niche farms that focus on sustainable methods and the production of goods for export, such as honey, berries and herbs. Although this sector remains small, it reflects the diversification and modernization of Ukrainian agriculture.
