Pop Culture and Watches: Past and Recent Anime Collaborations By Seiko

Anime is one of the most influential things in pop culture to ever come from Japan. Another globally influential entity from the Land of the Rising Sun is the watchmaking company Seiko. Being the innovative brand they are, Seiko has had multiple collaborations, and some are linked with anime.

A collaboration between watch brands and another brand from a different industry is similar to ones done with sneaker brands. The watch company will incorporate their collaborator’s branding in their watches. Usually, the agreement between both parties is the watch brand will create an entire line dedicated to the collaboration.

Such collaborations prove a couple of things: established watch brands constantly look for new ways to appeal to their target market, and a good watch that goes beyond the basics is a fashion statement that speaks about its wearer’s character. With that in mind, read about past and recent anime collaborations Seiko was involved in in the last few years.

    A)  Seiko 5 Sports JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind Collaboration

Seiko 5 Sports JoJo’s Bizarre Experience Golden Wind Alliance watches are men’s watches featuring a Japanese automated movement of the 4R36 caliber. Seiko developed this movement themselves, ensuring its accuracy. Aside from an in-house movement to make the collection more accurate, Seiko also designed them to work with minimal deviations when in the proximity of a magnetic field, reducing the possibility of internal damage.

Watches for this collaboration also have hands that glow in the dark and have a water resistance of up to 100 meters. There were nine designs to choose from this line released in 2019, each inspired by characters from the show. The watches have designs featuring Giorno Giovanna, Bruno Bucciarati, Leone Abbacchio, Guido Mista, Narancia Ghirga, Pannacotta Fugo, Trish Una, and Diavolo.

    B)  Haikyuu!! x Seiko Anime 5th anniversary Authorized Cooperation Watches

Haikyuu!! is a sports anime about volleyball that became popular with many anime fans globally. For its fifth anniversary, the anime collaborated with Seiko in 2019 to bring watches incorporating the show’s brand. For this collaboration, each of the four watches has an emblem in the 3, 6, and 12 o’clock positions representing the anime’s four high school volleyball teams.

Each watch is kept inside a special edition box, including five postcards based on visuals from the show’s first three seasons. In addition, the collaboration is also produced in limited edition, making it more special for those who were able to buy one. These watches give out a vibe of sophistication that novelty timepieces have, which is why Haikyuu!! Fans that bought them are lucky.

    C)  Seiko Studio Ghibli’s Fantasy Anime Film Castle in the Sky

Studio Ghibli’s fantasy anime film Castle in the Sky is one of Seiko’s anime collaborations for 2021. It’s a limited-edition collection under the Seiko Presage line featuring details from the animated film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. These easter eggs are displayed both in front and behind the watch.

In front, the watch’s enamel dial shows the emblem on the Sheeta’s Levistone pendant. The actual pendant itself has been recreated on the crown and the side of the watch. On the caseback, you’ll see a crafted rendering of the castle in the sky from the movie.

Seiko made only 1,200 copies of the watch for this collaboration. So for the lucky ones who were able to buy one, it’s a great investment and collector’s item.

    D)  Seiko 5 Sports One Piece Limited Edition

Continuing their growing number of anime collaborations in the past couple of years, Seiko released in November 2021 the Seiko 5 Sports One Piece line. This Seiko 5 Sports collaboration line has five watches, each representing a character from the show.

Each of the five character watches captures the manga’s central concept and the Street Style design of the Seiko 5 Sports. This new collaboration is aimed to bring fresh creativity to watch collectors and anime fans alike, and with the designs featured for it, they’ve done just that.

    Conclusion:

These are just a few of what looks like many more of Seiko’s collaborations with anime shows and movies. For anime fans and even watch collectors, these tie-ups are a sign of better fashionable options in the coming years.
