What Do High SGOT and SGPT Mean?

High levels of SGOT and SGPT may indicate liver disease or damage. Both enzymes are released when liver cells die, usually due to viral infection or drug toxicity.

In addition to the liver, SGOT is also found in other tissues such as heart muscle, muscle tissue, and kidneys; however, it is not found in the spleen or brain tissue. Other conditions that can cause elevated levels of these enzymes include non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cirrhosis (chronic liver scarring).

What Do High SGOT and SGPT Mean?

These are enzymes found in the liver. They are released into the bloodstream when liver cells die, damage to the liver, or inflammation (like in hepatitis) occurs. Both enzymes are released when liver cells die, usually due to viral infection or drug toxicity.

The symptoms of SGOT and SGPT test elevation include:

    Nausea and vomiting

    Abdominal pain

    Weakness and fatigue

You must visit a doctor as soon as possible if you have these symptoms. In addition to the liver, SGOT is also found in other tissues such as heart muscle, muscle tissue, and kidneys. AST is found in the brain and spleen but not the liver.

Other conditions that can cause elevated levels of these enzymes include non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cirrhosis. Fat accumulates in the liver of individuals who use little or no alcohol, leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Cirrhosis is a condition that occurs when scar tissue replaces healthy tissue in the liver, damaging its ability to function properly.

If you have a high amount of them, particularly when associated with symptoms and a change from previous results, it indicates that more testing is needed to determine what is happening with your liver. The liver is the body's biggest internal organ.

It performs many functions, including breaking down food into energy, removing toxins from the body, and helping blood clot properly. Enzymes are proteins produced by cells to help them function properly. If a cell makes too many or too few enzymes, health problems can occur.

The liver cells make the enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). These enzymes are released into the blood when there is damage to these cells.

If you have high levels of SGOT in your blood, it means that there is something wrong with how your liver is functioning. The two enzymes that make up the tests for these levels are called alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST).

They are released when there is damage to cells within your body this could be due to a virus or bacteria infection but can also happen as a side effect of some medications or alcohol consumption over time.

Your doctor might prescribe additional testing to rule out additional reasons for abnormal liver function. These include:

Liver enzymes in the blood (ALT, AST)

    Total bilirubin level

    Conclusion

If you have high levels of these enzymes, your doctor may recommend further testing to determine what is causing them. Your liver function is extremely important; it is the organ responsible for metabolizing fats, carbohydrates, and protein.

These activities help convert food into energy, or store it as fat if excess amounts are consumed. Your liver also produces amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, and it breaks down vitamins and helps your body get rid of toxins.

Ultimately, it is your liver that helps control blood sugar to avoid elevated glucose levels (hyperglycemia) and keep them within a normal range (euglycemia). Hence, high SGOT and SGPT levels could result from an abnormality in any of these functions.
