How to Install an Electric Shower Over a Bath

This guide will take you through a professional method of successfully installing your electric shower. So, put on your work boots and let’s get to it.

How to Install an Electric Shower Over a Bath

    First Step

The first thing you should do is to disconnect the power supply to the existing shower. Also, you do not want to risk the combination of water and faulty electricity, so ensure that your electric connection in the bathroom is functioning properly.

This step requires more experience with electrical connections, so if by any chance you observe any irregularities with your bathroom connections, contact a professional electrician to get it fixed. If however, you have not noticed any faults and your connections are functioning perfectly, then go ahead and put off the water supply to begin.

    Remove the existing shower unit

Next thing to do is to remove the existing shower unit. Most of the units are fixed to the wall with screws. So ensure that you have your tools, at least a screwdriver to unscrew the existing unit. This should be easy to do. After removing the screws, take out the existing unit and discard it.

Now, study your new unit and take note of its connections. Find out where the water supply should be connected, it may or may not be in the exact position of your old unit. Take out the front panel of your new shower unit and study the electrical connections there.

    Fixing the new unit

After you must have gotten yourself acquainted with the new unit and its connection, start marking the position of your new unit in the wall. You can choose to retain the same position as your former unit, or you can choose to get a new position for your new shower.

Use a pencil and mark off the new position. Make marks for screws, and drill holes where the new screws will be inserted. While drilling holes on tiled walls, ensure that you are careful with the setting to avoid breaking the surrounding tiles. You can get the help of a nice, capable neighbor for the drilling if this is a huge task for you. After successfully drilling the holes and marking off points, insert the new shower unit and use the screws to secure its position on the wall.

    Reconnecting the power

At this point, your new shower should be fixed in the wall and standing properly. It is now time to reconnect the power and water supply you disconnected before just in case you are wondering why it’s not working yet. Before the re-connection, check to see that the neutral, live and earth wires have been properly fixed in their right positions. The manuals for the particular shower unit you purchased should have directions on the proper positioning of the wires. Check the manual and ensure that all is as it should be. Screw on the front of the shower, and then turn on the power and water supply, and voila! Your new shower installation is complete.

If by any chance, the shower is not functioning after you turn on the power and water supply, then there is a high chance that the wiring (live, neutral and earth) was not properly connected. If you are unsure, please contact a professional to check it out and make any necessary corrections.

If you got to this stage and followed all instructions to the end, then there is nothing that could stop your new shower from functioning as intended. Installing your new shower single-handedly (or with a little assistance) is certainly something to brag about to your friends. You can invest that ‘installation fee’ that you have saved into a luxury, class-emanating soap dish.
