If you never suffer from any dental condition in your life, you are in a very, very small minority. The vast majority of people from around the globe will at some point get an oral health issue that needs to be addressed by a dentist. The good news is that the vast majority of these conditions are relatively easy to treat providing a diagnosis and the appropriate treatment is received within an acceptable timescale and this includes potentially deadly conditions such as oral cancer. Another point definitely worth noting is that attending regular checkups at your dental practice can dramatically reduce the risk of any common condition becoming more than a minor nuisance.

Gum Disease – Gum disease is caused by a buildup of plaque in the mouth and is characterized by bleeding, swelling and soreness but is usually totally preventable by following a strict regimen of brushing and flossing and of course regular dental checkups. If it’s left untreated, it can lead to the much more serious condition of periodontitis that could affect the tissues that help support teeth and keep them in place.

Halitosis – Otherwise known as bad breath, this condition can be offensive to other people and promote people passing comment. This is obviously best avoided. Again, regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups can alleviate this problem entirely.

Cavities – Cavities can become painful if not treated quickly. They may not cause a problem initially but can erode, leading to much more extensive dental treatment if left untreated. Twice yearly dental checkups can help prevent this basic ailment from progressing into a painful condition
Abscesses – Depending on the size of the abscess, these can generally be treated quickly with a course of antibiotics from your dentist. Although many abscesses are generally nothing more than a source of annoyance and minor irritation, it is important to seek treatment reasonably quickly.
